Dear Colleague,

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to participate in the 2nd Asian Water Cycle Symposium (AWCS) that will be held on the Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo, in Tokyo, Japan, 9 - 10 January 2007.

The symposium is associated with the Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI) that had been proposed in recognition of the need for accurate, timely, long-term, water cycle information as a basis for sound and effective water resources and risk management in the Asian region and formally introduced at the 1st Asian Water Cycle Symposium, in Tokyo, 2 - 4 November 2005. The main objectives of AWCI include convergence of observation in the Asian region and promoting of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach through application of integrated earth observation data, model output, and downscaling techniques to address local water resources management issues in a river basin.

The 2nd Asian Water Cycle Symposium will provide a good opportunity for participants to discuss possibilities of effective collaboration among local/national water resources management and meteorological authorities and institutions, international organizations and programmes, and space agencies, which is essential for successful implementation of the Demonstration Projects and ensuing AWCI activities.

The 2nd Asian Water Cycle Symposium aims to review and discuss a baseline implementation plan of the Demonstration Projects and respective proposals for the Demonstration Projects on nominated river basins in individual countries including the main local water resources issues, existing observation capability, and data availability.

We thank you in advance for your participation on this occasion.
